Myonics

Mouse Control Armband for People with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

OVERVIEW

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular disease that causes muscle loss.  When DMD has caused muscle loss in the arms or hands, the patient would not be able to use a computer. This has strongly influenced the patient’s work and daily life.

Myonics is a wearable gadget that enables people with DMD to control a mouse for computer use. By processing the EMG signal from arm muscles, Myonics allows the user to control the mouse through different arm movements, thus making the cursor move and click. Meanwhile, the band is designed to provide the user with a comfortable wearing experience and enable the caretaker to set up/uninstall easily.

The project has won the top 20 of the James Dyson International Awards.
